Cannabis culture is rich with its own unique lexicon, a mix of old-school terms and new slang that keeps evolving. This glossary decodes the secret language of stoners, providing a humorous yet informative look into the words that define the cannabis community today.

420
The ultimate stoner term, 420 is synonymous with cannabis culture. Originating from a group of high school students in the 1970s who met at 4:20 PM to search for a hidden crop, the term has evolved into a global symbol for cannabis and its celebration, particularly on April 20th.

Blunt
A blunt is a cannabis cigar, typically rolled with a tobacco leaf or cigar wrapper. It’s larger and more potent than a joint, making it a popular choice for group smoking sessions. The mix of cannabis and tobacco gives a unique buzz that many enjoy.

Bong
A bong is a water pipe used to smoke cannabis. The water cools the smoke, providing a smoother hit. Bongs come in various shapes and sizes, from simple plastic tubes to elaborate glass art pieces.

Budtender
The knowledgeable staff at a dispensary assist customers in selecting cannabis products. Think of them as the sommeliers of the weed world, guiding you through strains, edibles, and more with expertise and a smile.

Couch Lock
The state of being so stoned that you’re essentially glued to the couch. Typically associated with heavy indica strains, couch lock is both a blessing and a curse for those seeking relaxation.

Dank
High-quality, potent cannabis. If someone describes weed as dank, it’s a compliment. Dank bud is sticky, aromatic, and packed with trichomes, the tiny crystals loaded with THC.

Dime Bag
A small amount of weed typically costs ten dollars. While the price and amount can vary by location, the term has stuck around from the days of street-level cannabis transactions.

Doobie
A slang term for a joint. Popularized in the 1960s and 70s, doobie brings a nostalgic vibe to the simple act of rolling and smoking a cannabis cigarette.

Edibles
Cannabis-infused food or drink products. From brownies and gummies to teas and sodas, edibles offer an alternative to smoking, with effects that can be more intense and longer-lasting.

Hotbox
The act of smoking cannabis in an enclosed space maximizes the inhalation of smoke. Cars, bathrooms, and closets are popular hotbox spots. Just remember to open a window eventually.

Kief
The fine, powdery resin that falls off cannabis flowers. Collected from grinders or sifted from a bud, kief is potent and can be sprinkled on top of bowls or used to make hash.

Munchies
The intense hunger that often follows cannabis consumption. Whether it's pizza, ice cream, or an inexplicable craving for pickles and peanut butter, the munchies are a well-known side effect of getting high.

Nug
A high-quality piece of cannabis bud. Nugs are typically dense, aromatic, and covered in trichomes. Finding a fat nug in your stash is always a delight.

Roach
The small, unsmokable end of a joint or blunt. Roaches can be saved and combined to roll new joints, ensuring no weed goes to waste.

Sativa
A type of cannabis known for its uplifting and energizing effects. Sativa strains are often chosen for daytime use, creativity, and socializing.

Stoner
A person who regularly consumes cannabis. Stoners are often laid-back, creative, and part of a community that shares a love for the plant.

Toke
To inhale cannabis smoke. “Take a toke” is an invitation to share in the experience, whether from a joint, bong, or pipe.

Wake and Bake
The act of consuming cannabis first thing in the morning. For some, it’s the perfect way to start the day with a burst of creativity and positivity.

New Terms from the Younger Generation

Zaza
Refers to high-grade, exotic cannabis strains that are often more expensive and potent than regular weed. The term emphasizes the rare and sought-after nature of these premium strains.

Shoes
A quirky new term that made the DEA’s list of drug slang. It's one of the more unexpected entries, showing the creativity of the evolving cannabis lexicon.

Loud
A term for cannabis that has a strong, pungent smell. When someone says they have "loud," they're bragging about the high quality and potency of their weed.

Terps
Short for terpenes, the aromatic compounds in cannabis responsible for their distinct smells and flavors. Now used as slang for cannabis itself, reflecting the emphasis on flavor and aroma in modern cannabis culture.

Pretendo
A playful term for low-quality cannabis that pretends to be good but fails to deliver. It's the weed equivalent of a poser.

Understanding cannabis slang is more than just learning new words; it’s about connecting with a culture and community that spans the globe. Whether you’re a seasoned enthusiast or new to the scene, familiarizing yourself with these terms will enhance your cannabis conversations and experiences
